We have made several trips to Keokuk and we keep finding more reasons to come back to one of the Mississippi’s most historic towns. We tell people if you love architecture, history, river life or scenery, you should head to Lee County and take it all in. You’ll need a good meal while you’re in the area and Keokuk has that important part of your visit more than covered. The Iowa Gallivant is on another autumn road trip and our heading was lunch at Rascal’s Pub & Grub right on the main drag.
Classic cheese-steak sandwich with bell peppers, onions and mushrooms brought together with rich and delicious melted cheese. This was a two hand’er and juicy with every bite. Next up was their gyro and it came highly recommended from the table beside us. And we always let the locals guide us on our gallivants. The creamy cucumber sauce, fresh diced tomatoes and onions played nice with the gyro meat as they should. Both put some good’ole fashion Iowa smiles on our faces but the next sandwich made them stretch across the lock and damn.
Comfort food can reach masterpiece level if its done with care and passion. Rascal’s crew has both heart and soul, here in Keokuk, and it can be experienced with their cooking. Their Grilled Chicken Salad on Toasted Marble Rye was an easy nomination for our sandwich search. Not too dry, not too much dressing and its loaded with that most important ingredient. Chicken. What a concept! We have had all sorts of crazy sandwiches, this year on The Best Between Bread, and we have to give props to the folks who take the traditional and do it right and tasty. We’ll see if Keokuk gets a sandwich champion in December from these Rascal’s….
