We came to Waterloo on one of the most important days of the year and that means we needed an established landmark to show us what a good meal is all about on Mother’s Day and that would be Newton’s Paradise Cafe. You know what you’re getting into when you click on The Iowa Gallivant‘s Best Between Bread series…..Prepare to eat like a Mother!
Round one! Quite possibly the best Bloody Mary ever made it to our quest looking for the best sandwich and we invite this, the spicy-tomato’ie partner of every Mommy holiday to join our adventures anytime. And just what did Mom order. Well, whatever the heck she wants, that’s what! A giant Chicken fried Steak covered with creamy and peppery country gravy, a homemade biscuit and crispy hash browns. All this is great but what was the sandwich?!? I think you’re all going to like this.
You can order French toast all you want. When I’m in Downtown Waterloo, I want Iowa toast. And I don’t need it given to me in the traditional style though I absolutely love it that way. We recommend Newton’s twist on the Monte Cristo! Layers of sliced ham, turkey, melted Swiss cheese, mayonnaise and Dijon mustard all between that beautiful Iowa toast with powdered sugar. And the kicker? Newton’s homemade raspberry jelly to dip all that goodness in to. You cannot have this sandwich without that jelly and you need to devour every part of it. We’ll see if Waterloo has their Mother’s Day delight showing up on The Iowa Gallivant in December when we crown a sandwich champion!
