On the outskirts of Cedar Rapids is a growing little town that is home to a local sauce master evolving into a sandwich master. CR Whiskey Sauce Company is located on the main drag in Ely and it has made quite the name for itself with their countless sauces, rubs, and seasonings and a great shopping experience for folks looking to explore small town Iowa. The music was pumping and The Iowa Gallivant knew we found just the place we love visiting. Get ready to dive into the world of BBQ mops and Cajun injectors!
Hundreds of selections are packed into this shop and virtually all of them can be sampled. Bowls of pretzels and tortilla chips are all over the store for dippin’ with sliced cucumbers ready to be dusted with seasonings and dry rubs. Great way to get your vegetables! And you better order some of their fresh blueberry sweet tea. Hey, I just got my fruits too! And now we need our protein…
People kept asking for sandwiches and for the first couple years CR Whiskey Sauce Company was open the answer was always “No”. Then 2017 rolls around and the answer is “Come get a big-ass sandwich”! In those exact words. But you can only get a sandwich here on the weekends and you better come early. They also change with every passing week and they’re not announced until the day of. How’s that for anticipation! Today we smashed their Tennessee Whiskey Chicken on Naan bread with queso, coleslaw, fresh baby spinach and a side of their own Double Barrel BBQ sauce. That was a mouthful and, needless to say, so was this sandwich. Chicken was tender and the queso made it incredibly rich and the BBQ sauce brought it all together with a Tennessee harmony in East central Iowa. Time to get sauced in Ely and see if they have what it takes to win our championship in December!
