Iowa’s top vacation spot has a LOT of restaurants and that means we had to make sure we picked a place that had incredible sandwiches in a humongous pool of opportunities. Here’s how the painstaking selection went. We were about to turn into our hotel and we said….There’s a sandwich place. Four seconds later we were at the Smack Shack! See how difficult my job can be. But there was nothing difficult when it came to devouring what we ordered…
The Smack Shack is on HWY 71 right next to the Okoboji Commons Hotel and as you can see that its not very big. And it doesn’t need to be. They do amazing work with the space they have, and the sandwiches are huge in flavor. The staff kicked ours out in wicked fast time with no pre-cooking at all. The first one was the vegetarian Sweet Potato Guacamole burger above. It had a hearty flavor and Leah destroyed it. (I only had a bite) It was one of the best vegetarian sandwiches we’ve had on this Best Between Bread Search but it’s not what we’re putting up for a possible championship in December.
The Spicy Fried Thigh with a Habenero-Buttermilk breading with their Smack Sauce and Pickles! It was was served pipping hot and with the perfect amount of spicy kick in every bite. We had a lot to eat in Okoboji and this could not have been a better way to start a trip to the lake. The Smack Shack is just the place we gravitate to on The Iowa Gallivant and it just might be a place that brings home a sandwich crown to Iowa’s Great Lakes!
