We’ve been to Baxa’s Sutliff Store & Tavern many times and this is our second time writing about it. Only the most memorable of places find their way on to The Iowa Gallivant and this is one of our favorite day trips from our headquarters in Hills, IA. I ordered a sandwich I haven’t had in years and it was easy to put on our Best Between Bread series. Let’s get to know Sutliff and it’s tavern a little first.
The tiny unincorporated town of Sutliff is located right on the Johnson County line just down the road from the town of Lisbon, and is known for their iconic wooden plank bridge. It stretches over the Cedar River and is loved and cherished by folks from all over the area. Once you walk into Baxa’s, you’ll see an endless ceiling of dollar bills that have been pinned by customers for decades. But just try to take some down for your tip. I dare you!

Before we get to what I ordered that made it to our infamous search I think we should see what else we dabbled with. Two selections that have made it to my family’s table, in Sutliff, since I was a child is their always amazing Baxa burger and fried chicken gizzards. The crunch of the gizzards made me homesick when I lived outside of Iowa every time I though of it. Another basket of nostalgia was served up perfectly on this day too.
Think of all the flavors that take you back to times that you may not have thought about for years. Fried bologna is one that gives me a positive flashback to my youth every time and our recent trip to Sutliff brought the memories of growing up in Iowa rushing back. They use a very thick cut of bologna and fry it up to perfection on toasted bread with plenty of cheese, mayo, pickles, onion and lettuce. Everything a classic bologna samich should have. Our sandwich champion will be crowned in December….Sutliff is no bologna! Well, yea it is…Be proud of that, Baxa’s!
