We always have a mission when we travel and one very important part of the mission is to deviate from it whenever you get a chance and always, always, ALWAYS take the long way home. We find some of the most memorable place when we’re smelling the roses which is why we headed to Gunder. Folks from Cresco to Waukon told us we needed to stop at the infamous Irish Shanti and marvel at their famous Gunderburger. You like eating local? Then you’re going to love all their fresh meat from nearby Elgin!
Say hello to The Luck of the Irish Burger! A huge beef patty with their famous corned beef, Swiss cheese, Jameson caramelized onions, and Guinness mustard. And a giant hill of LaVonne’s homemade potato salad. Hey, it’s an Irish joint! You need your taters! This burger was amazing but it was another juicy masterpiece that is up for The Iowa Gallivant’s Best Between Bread search. While most will travel long distances for their amazingly colossal Gunderburger, we opted for a different mouthwatering meat. You in the mood for pork?
The Sow Melt with all of the bacon, cheese, crispy onion straws, and delicious Shanti sauce on buttery Texas toast with all that delicious local ground pork could be taking a championship home in December. This pork burger was absolutely worth the drive on the beautiful River Bluffs Scenic Byway. Get out, make your plans for Gunder, have a sandwich!
