Marshalltown, IA: Marshall County (Our 67th County)
Just over 39 years ago, my family rolled into Marshalltown, IA on late August day and, wouldn’t you know it, your favorite little travel blogger was born. That’s me! And we made it back during the first leg of our very long autumn road trip. We need sandwiches and we need that sweet saucy flavor with all that smoke. Smokin’ G’s BBQ hit the trifecta for The Iowa Gallivant.
I’ve said it before and written it on occasion. Blessed is the BBQ joint that lets you dictate the amount of sauce on your Q. All three sauces pictured at Smokin’ G’s are great, but you don’t have to dive into them if you don’t want to. In fact, the slow smoked meats here hold up on their own. Don’t be afraid to party a little though. The brisket, pulled pork, and breaded chicken wrap also came with some killer sides too. A tangy-sweet coleslaw, chunky applesauce, beautiful baked beans, and quite possibly the greatest cheesy potatoes on Earth. That’s just what came with our meals. There’s a lot more where that came from. You know what else we got. Something called “burnt” but you won’t be disappointed by this style.

One of the holiest cuts of the BBQ world is known as the Burnt Ends. Trimmed from the ends of fully smoked beef brisket and thrown back into the smoker thus creating a huge punch of smoky flavor. Smokin’ G’s has perfected their burnt ends among other selection on their menu. It the ends for us though and they get Marshalltown in the running for our Best Between Bread award in December.
