The Best Between Bread-Iowa’s Sandwich Masters: Locale 16, Cherokee

Cherokee turned out to be right on our way and we always break for steak! And pizza…Smelt fry’s….Not so much squirrels but maybe one that had a cute bow tie. 214 West Main Street

The small towns of NW-Iowa are some of Iowa’s biggest gems and at every turn we were finding one restaurant after another that we needed to stop for lunch so we could showcase a local legend. A legend that fits oh-so perfectly in a fresh roll that’s grilled just the way you prefer. We wanted juicy steak and got it at the Gasthaus Bar & Grill on historic Main Street Cherokee. And that’s not all we had!

We love restaurants that double as local museums and we’ve had the good fortune to find a few along the way. The Gasthaus is no exception. Cherokee County through the decades is on full display here with a different exhibit at every table. Now, let’s get to the food!

A couple things before we get to the headliner of this article. The Gasthaus has award winning breaded pork tenderloins and that was an easy pick. Leah only got halfway through it but she’s only 11. Maybe when she’s 12 she can find the other end. And you want to know what will change your life forever? Dipping a waffle fry in their Cheeseburger Chowder. These were just warming things up for what made The Iowa Gallivant’s year-long search for the Best Between Bread.

The Wholly Cow! Sirloin steak cooked to your liking and in our case, medium rare, sauteed red onion, mushrooms, melted cheese, and one of the juiciest steak sandwiches I’ve ever had. Each bite as tender as the last. Thanks to Barbara and everyone else at the Gasthaus and please stay tuned. Cherokee may have a champion in December….
