Iowa Omelets By the Dozen

*It was a heck of a time promoting eggs this year and earlier this May we teamed up with the Iowa Egg Council for National Egg Month, and went around the state to feature a dozen restaurants and their omelets! The Iowa Egg Council sponsored our travels and the views expressed in this blog post are of our own. Now, let’s gallivant!

Cowpoke Omelet at The Barnyard Restaurant-Decatur, Iowa

The Barnyard knows how we all like to eat local. The owner raises his own cattle and it really shows in the quality of beef in the meals here. The Cowpoke comes with hash browns and cheese inside, and I chose sausage as my meat. I figured I’d have a breakfast steak on the side too, which was juicy beef tenderloin! If you’re on I-35 then make the Barnyard happen.

Kitchen Sink Omelet at Legend’s Cafe-Red Oak, Iowa

I think you know where this is going when you hear “kitchen sink”. All the meats, all the veggies, plenty of melted cheese and I had them add their rich and creamy sausage gravy over that omelet made with local eggs. And that was the 1/4 order of hash browns…Imagine a full order! Your HWY 34 road trip needs this.

All Meat Omelet at Cafe 76-Waukon, Iowa

Cafe 76 is positioned inside the Equity Cooperative Livestock Sales which means we’re talking sale barn cooking! in my travels I can say that sale barns are some of the most comforting meals you can experience on the road. This was a meaty omelet inside and outside!

The Steakhouse Omelet at Chuckwagon Restaurant-Adair, Iowa

Another place that’s getting their beef about as local as it gets. The Chuckwagon is directly off of I-80 and while you’re enjoying this beefy omelet, you’ll notice a pasture across the interstate. That’s the cattle getting raised and going into this breakfast, their steaks and award winning burgers at the Chuckwagon!

French Style Omelet at Milk & Honey-Harlan, Iowa

Milk & Honey is a farm to table experience that ya’gotta have in Western Iowa! The French style omelet has a softer texture than the classic omelets most of us ares used to, and you order yours with as many fillings as you want at this popular restaurant. I went with ham, cheese, tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, onions and spinach with a hot cup of coffee. Get on the Western Skies Scenic Byway and head to Shelby County for this beauty!

The AFD Firehouse Omelet at AK’s Chrome Kitchen-Algona, Iowa

SPICY ALERT! Spicy sausage, chili peppers and pepper jack cheese make up the Firehouse omelet so make sure your beverage is full and ready to get refilled. One of the side choices is their gourmet French toast and I highly recommend you take them up on that.

The Johnnies Mars Omelet at Johnnie Mars Family Restaurant-Sioux City, Iowa

Load this four egg omelet up, Sioux City! Ham, mushrooms, peppers, onions, hash browns, American cheese, feta cheese and served with your choice of buttery toast. I’m a rye guy myself, as you can see. Look how perfect this omelet was cooked and the egg is paper thin.

Chicken Cordon Bleu Omelet at Mullets-Des Moines, Iowa

Chicken cordon bleu anything is something I’ll always be a fan of and this was the first time I had it in omelet form. Mullets is very well known in Central Iowa with all their unique twists on breakfast. This tasty omelet was filled with breaded chicken, ham, Swiss cheese and then topped with velvety hollandaise sauce. Bring it on!

Meat Lovers Omelet at Sunrise Cafe-Le Grand, Iowa

Gimme the bacon, ham and sausage, please! Load it up with cheese, peppers, onions and mushrooms and we got ourselves a legendary Sunrise omelet. Their portion sizes are also legendary…..I mean look at those hash browns! This restaurant is a must-stop on your Historic Lincoln Highway road trip.

Ham & Cheese Omelet at Pottsie’s Cafe-Burt, Iowa

Sometimes simplicity is all you need, folks. The server said the ham and cheese omelet topped with cheese sauce was her favorite and I abide. Pottsie’s is in a small Kossuth County town on Main Street-America with all that comforting cooking you’re imagining right now. Look at the steam rolling out of that hot cup of coffee…..

Gyro Omelet at All American Diner-Muscatine, Iowa

There was no way I wasn’t ordering this omelet. Gyro meat was calling my name and tzatziki sauce is one of my all-time favorite condiments! They didn’t skimp on that wonderful and flavorful gyro meat and they made sure I received plenty of veggies so my mom wouldn’t be disappointed.

Quadruple Fried Panther Omelet-J’s Homestyle Cooking-Cedar Falls, Iowa

Headlining this omelet madness is this crazy serving you see here that’s served-up near the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls! 16 eggs, four chicken fried steaks, a huge amount of hash browns and a wheelbarrow of sausage gravy. Bring some friends with you for this one!

Here’s to egg on our face, Gallivant Nation! Sign me up for an omelet road trip anytime because breakfast food is the best food. Thanks to all the folks that made this happen and I hope to see you again. Keep’em cracking and never stop gallivanting!
