Their pork tenderloin was made famous here in part to The Travel Channel. But on our trip we went in another direction! 3408 North Plainview Road

Walcott, IA: Scott County

Just off of Interstate 80 and right next to the world’s largest truck stop is Gramma’s Kitchen and a menu that would be grandma approved by many. That’s right folks, it’s homemade here with a touch of a little more homemade and at the end they to add more homemade. Sometimes staying ON the beaten path is the best option. And if you’ve been keeping up with The Iowa Gallivant you’ll see that we tend to wander. This time we saw our landmark from the busy interstate and nothing else was going to distract us. Except all the neet’o trucks from across the street at the annual Truckers Jamboree. Shiny stuff!

Gramma’s can be an oasis to any traveler that’s been grabbing the snacks at convenience stores and zipping in and out of the drive-thru on a long road trip. If you’re craving a home cooked meal, but don’t want to veer too far from the road then we suggest Gramma’s for sure. We had the traditional liver and onions with thick cut bacon with….wait for it. Real homemade mashed potatoes with gravy. A lost art in many places these days but not at Gramma’s. We also went the pasta route with a huge portion of baked lasagna and a cheesy mountain of Garden Pasta with penne and tons of fresh veggies and tomatoes. Did I mention there was homemade mashed potatoes here? I did. I like those. You know what else I like?

You don’t need a ticket for this club. Just a huge appetite!

Gramma’s Club sandwich almost needs a flatbed trailer to serve-up. And that picture is showing half of it! This monstrous sandwich of toasted bread, sliced ham, smoked turkey, crispy bacon, fresh lettuce with tomato and mayonnaise just pulled into our Best Between Bread search. We’ll see if Walcott takes home our state championship in December!
