A Grain Bin the Whole Family Can Stay In

A prairie oasis known as Dog Creek entertains countless visitors every year. It’s also home to some of Iowa’s most unique cabins.

Sutherland, IA: O’Brien County

We have written many posts about our latest trip to O’Brien County and if you have been reading them you can see why we have fallen in love with this area. Four days and three nights were spent here by Team Goodvin and what a memorable visit we had. The days were long and full of discoveries while the nights were spent in some amazing places. And I mean amazing!

The Dog Creek Grain Bins sit atop of a hill overlooking the beautiful recreation area giving you some stunning views of the quiet landscape. If you look quickly, at these cabins, you may think they’re your everyday Iowa grain bins that you’ve seen your whole life. But, at a second glance, you’ll see a modern metallic lodge towering over the prairie.

Hiking trails are just outside the front door of the grain bins and they wrap around the rec area creating some stunning overlooks for sundown and sunrise. After we explored, we spent much of the evening on the deck watching the rural world go by. Hunters, fisherman, travelers and families have experienced these grain bins many times all knowing they have experienced one of Iowa’s most special places to call home. Even if it’s just for a night or two.

Another successful family getaway.

Making you feel like you’re home….That’s a theme we ran into during our long weekend and it’s a quality folks from O’Brien County take pride in. We were over five hours from Iowa City during our trip and felt like we were a part of the community the whole time we were here. The prairie is very much alive in O’Brien County and it made us want to stay longer and come back more often. You may have never thought you’d love a grain bin… the only way to see if you do is to get out to Dog Creek soon and often. Thank you, O’Brien County!
