If you’ve been following Team Goodvin over the years you may notice that this is our triumphant return to Balltown and Breitbach’s Country Dining. The reason being….it’s that great of a place! We have a calendar bursting at the seams with new adventures, but it takes a special place to land a spot on our blog multiple times. This little unincorporated town with one of Iowa’s most legendary restaurants may show up on The Iowa Gallivant for years to come. We travel to Northeast Iowa for a Mother’s Day excursion that only Dubuque County can provide.

Balltown sits a top of the NE Iowa Mississippi River Valley in one of the most beautiful and historic regions in Iowa and the entire Midwestern United States. Smack-dab in the middle of an amazing loop through communities like Holy Cross, Dyersville, Farley, Luxembourg, New Vienna, and others. The long history of French settlements are storied history here along with the heavy Central European influence that so many of this area have roots in. Old country traditions mixed with Iowan culture meet a culinary movement hearkening back to authentic regional flavors. Breitbach’s has the ambiance…the classic Midwest menu…the enthusiastic bar… and a crew that can’t wait to host your table and tell you all the greatness that is Breitbach’s. Let’s go over the Mother’s Day buffet, shall we.
The Cold Table…..

Hungry yet? How about pies, pies, PIES! Including Breitbach’s cream pie made with Snicker’s candy bars…..For the love of sugar please make sure you save room for a slice(s)….slices of that one. With that being said we managed to get absolutely satisfied with some of the state’s best brunches. If only Balltown had one of the Mississippi River’s most scenic overlooks to enjoy while we walk off brunch a little. Well, this little town happens to have that, too!

The family made our way to the overlook and we stood there admiring the unbelievable valley below. Home to some of the worlds best farmland and true Iowa must-see.

NE Iowa was experiencing a busy Mother’s Day weekend and we were happy to be a part of it. Breitbach’s provided the brunch and that was only the beginning of our Dubuque County expedition. Stay tuned to the Iowa Gallivant……We’re just getting warmed up here!

Thanks for reading! -Team Goodvin
