Leah holding up a delicious masterpiece of masterpieces. Biscuits and Gravy from the Classic Deli in Brooklyn, IA.Our loyal readers have noticed a trend. Team Goodvin loves to seek out new restaurants with every trip. We strive to order interesting items and comb the menus for dishes we’ve never experienced. There is something to be said about a “go-to” when anguishing over a selection while your patient server awaits your order. Sometimes it takes the pen tap on the notepad that gets my decision expedited. One person’s version of “comfort food” could be considered an oddity to another. And that’s the best part of your selection. Your signature of approval can almost be seen on the food before you take your first bite, just as a wheelbarrow of memories swirl around in your head. And to me, a wheelbarrow is the preferred method of applying gravy over the plate of my “go-to”. The culinary phenomena of fresh biscuits topped with a creamy peppery sauce has kept me up at nights thinking about it and lured me out of bed in the early mornings. Team Goodvin is on the hunt for Iowa’s greatest plate of Biscuits and Gravy! And we’re not even close to stopping for the year on our quest for B&G! When will we announce the winning restaurant? Great question!
Our calendars are marked and soon many Iowa restaurants will have there’s marked too. Dec 1st, 2015. The B&G party for the ages! There are many ways to prepare this breakfast staple. Or lunch special, dinner platter, brunch option, late night soak’er-upper, pot-luck item, wedding present……But we do have a couple stipulations for our contenders. We know that there are some tasty pre-made biscuit options and quality gravy mixes. However, we have two simple rules. Both biscuits and gravy MUST be made from scratch! And, so far, we haven’t had a hard time finding the institutions that have been able to accomplish these two important tasks.
The majesty of breakfast ala Americana. A huge portion of B&G served on the counter at Newton’s Paradise Cafe in downtown Waterloo, IA!Here we are in August and we still have a lot of places to visit by December 1st. Here’s a list of finalists up to this point.
