The Best Between Bread-Iowa’s Sandwich Masters: Locale 52, Grinnell

The center of the state is tasting better year after year and a lot of it is due to one of Iowa’s most well-known restaurant’s. 924 Main Street

Grinnell, IA: Poweshiek County

It would be crazy to not include our last sandwich in Grinnell on our statewide search for the Best Between Bread. We would have been foolish if we skipped over this establishment that is gobbling up the positive press quicker than its customers can eat the locally-sourced creations that their talented crew presents to the tables. The Prairie Canary is a must experience, in my book, and we think this just might give you that extra incentive to make your head for Grinnell. Let’s look at some pretty pictures!

Owner, Paul Durr, has turned the Prairie Canary into powerhouse when it comes to destination restaurants and there are a lot of locals that can attest to that. Not just customers, but local businesses and farmers too. They strive to support as much as Iowa has to offer with every endeavor and it shows up plate after plate, like the Dirty Canary. An Angus beef patty topped with a beautiful fried egg, tender pulled pork, bacon and crispy onions. An burger worth driving for but its not what made the list for our search. Prepare for one of the most gourmet twists on one of comfort food’s biggest stars.

It’s not your mother’s grilled cheese and she’s okay with that.

Grilled cheese and jam! That’s right….AND JAM! I was wondering where that combo was going to go and I’m telling you that it went directly into my mouth and I walked away wonder where that has been my whole life. Toasted artisan bread packed with cheddar, provolone, herbed goat cheese, strawberry-rhubarb jam, kale and spiced pecans. This is the grownup grilled cheese master and it could very well get our award for Best Between Bread in December. We’re starting to get into soup-dunking season and Grinnell has that more than covered.
