Czech Village-Cedar Rapids: Linn County

The City of Five Seasons is home to A LOT of great place to eat and the traveling band of Team Goodvin has made many trips to take in as many of them as possible. Today’s visit brought us to one of Iowa’s most historic neighborhoods and the Village Meat Market & Cafe. In the land of Czech’s, our favorite sandwich was Cajun.

Before we dive into sandwiches we did a belly flop into some of the other delights this busy meat market had in store. With ‘Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain’ playing from the live music in the dining room, we tore into candied bacon and smoked salmon while browsing through the fresh meat selections. They had everything from classic cuts of steak and chicken to beef hearts and hogs feet. Basically everything that was on my last letter to Santa Claus. We even put down their delicious Czech style pancakes. Griddled to perfection with crispy edges. The way pancakes should be, by God! Charlie tried out their goulash, delicious but not pictured to that kid eating faster than my camera could take a picture. Let’s get to what we came for. What the Village has between bread….

The first two sandwiches that rolled out were the Butcher Loaf and the Chicken Salad. Czech style meatloaf with American cheese and you can’t go wrong with any of that. The Chicken Salad was mayo free and served with a cream cheese dill spread on the side that I shamelessly dipped the onion rings into. These were good choices, but the sandwich that gave Cedar Rapids a contender is so deliciously pictured below……

Behold! The Cajun Reuben!

Smoked corned beef, kraut, Swiss cheese, and spicy remoulade all on toasted French bread. It was piled high and not a crumb or streak remoulade was left on the plate and that’s code for a great sandwich. It was the kind of sandwich that promotes severe sandwich envy- everyone wanted to eat it and Monie didn’t really want to share. The selected side was Cajun Baked Beans, which all of us enjoyed as well.

The Iowa Gallivant is off and running. However, thanks this meal, we’re having to take a breather and tend to the meat sweats. That’s a good thing!
